The legend of Father Christmouse
OK, I confess this is totally inspired by, and a homage to Schulz's Linus and the Great Pumpkin storyline. It's no secret that I love Peanuts. But wouldn't it be fantastic to see a teeny tiny Father Christmouse streak past on Christmas Eve...?!
Don't forget to drop by each weekday next week for the Chalk & Cheese Christmas Special!

Totally awesome news!
I'm delighted to announce that Chalk & Cheese has been chosen to feature in the much anticipated Team Cul de Sac book (Andrew McMeel Publishing), to be published 2012.
Cartoonists were invited to donate original art made especially for the book which is designed to raise awareness about Parkinson's disease, in honour of Richard Thompson (he being the genius behind the utterly fabulous Cul de Sac comic strip). Part of the profits from the sale of the book will benefit the Michael J Fox Foundation (MJFF); the original art submitted will also be auctioned as part of the fundraiser, with all of the auction money going to MJFF. Additionally, there will be a limited number of deluxe edition books signed and numbered by Richard Thompson himself.
My cartoon has Chalk and Cheese meeting Cul de Sac's Mr. Danders the guinea pig (gweep!) and will feature alongside cartoon greats such as Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes), Patrick McDonnell (Mutts), Jim Davis (Garfield) and children's illustrator Mo Willems.
Wooohoooooo!!
You can find out more about Team Cul de Sac here.

Cartoon cats and dogs
Some cartoon trivia: the glorious Calvin & Hobbes strip was first published on this day 1985. I love that Hobbes is just a floppy old toy when anyone else is around.

An oldie but goody
I first heard a version of this joke on The Muppet Show circa 1977 and it's stuck with me ever since. I know it's really cheesey, but I still think it's funny.

Autumn starts today!
Or fall, as Chalk would say. I wish we (the Brits) called it fall; it makes far more sense. According to Wikipedia, the term 'fall' was used to denote the season in 16th century England, a contraction of Middle English expressions like "fall of the leaf" and "fall of the year".

Okapia johnstoni
Credit where credit's due - this is what my son, Noah, said as I admired the okapi at Marwell Zoo earlier this year. Moments like that are the exact reason why I always carry a notebook...

I'm going to take a two week break from C&C to get some much needed rest after a frantic summer working and illness in the family. Normal service will resume Monday 5th September.

3 Cheers for Pooh! (For who?) For Pooh!
Winnie-the-Pooh is 90 on Sunday (according to NYPL). Happy Birthday, Bear, and thanks for the memories!

Decisions, decisions...
To celebrate Winnie-the-Pooh's birthday this coming weekend, I've done two Pooh-inspired posts.
When my kids were younger, "Shall we rock or shall we Pooh?" was asked at the beginning of car journeys to decide what we should listen to (nowadays it's mostly rock). I can't tell you the hours we've spent listening to it on CD. We have it as a BBC recording read by the brilliant Bernard Cribbins, described by Bookaboo as 'the actor with a voice as warm as onion gravy.' Wonderful!

Favourites
I had a strange dilemma writing this particular strip - should I use British or American spelling? The original picture book was only published in the US, so it wasn't an issue. Here I opted for the British (since I am). I discussed it later with Jane, who suggested in future I spell Cheese's words in the British idiom, and Chalk's in the American. What a great solution!
